  • Real estate to Hee Haw

Random notes from the passing week:

We’ve gotten another sales contract on our house in Florence, Ala.

  • Cups and cookbooks

Last weekend was all about cups and cookbooks at our house. Well, actually it was mostly about watching college basketball on television, but it wasn’t supposed to be.

  • A house with character?

Our 46-year-old house in Florence, Ala., has been a great house, and we’ve really enjoyed living there. It’s got a lot of space, a sunroom where we can watch the birds, rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks, lots of trees and bulb-filled flower beds.

But like any older house, it has its share of little flaws and idiosyncrasies.

  • Weddings and real life

I don’t like weddings much, even though I’ve had three of them. They’re usually high-stress times geared as much for the bride and groom’s relatives as for the happy couple.

  • Leave chili to Wendy’s

In the end, it was better than Wendy’s. Whether it was enough better than Wendy’s for the trouble it caused, well ….

Now, don’t get me wrong. I like Wendy’s chili. No, I love Wendy’s chili.

  • Our dogs and table manners

Our dogs have forgotten their table manners.

When we sit down to eat, Molly, my wife’s 2-year-old beagle, only a few months out of the animal rescue group, jumps up and puts her front paws on someone’s lap and her head within licking distance of the nearest plate.

  • Too tired for the big game

We’re not playing in the Super Bowl this year. We lost, and lost and lost.

My wife laughs when I refer to sports teams I follow as “we.” When I say we just ran a punt back for a touchdown, Jenny points out:

  • Discarding the memories

A couple of weeks ago I spent several hours reminiscing about the past and discarding some of the memories.

Translation: I finally got around to cleaning out my closet.

  • An overdose of HGTV

Blame it on Home & Garden television. I think Jenny and I have watched too many of those programs about what you need to do to get your house ready to sell.

  • Thermostat set on toasty

Maybe the carmakers are onto something with those new individual climate controls.

You know the ones—the driver’s side can be set at 72 degrees and the passenger side at a nippy 68.
