Today's News

  • Spring cleanup

It’s spring cleanup time and our area certainly needs it. Recent rains have spurred the growth of weeds and high grass, leaving a generally overgrown look in some areas both in and outside the city of New Albany.

  • Previewing the fast pitch playoffs

The end of this week officially marks the end of the regular season for softball, and it looks like the divisions are settled and we know who will make the playoffs.
Starting in 1A, I had the chance to watch the Myrtle-West Union series on Monday and Tuesday, with the Lady Eagles taking the sweep to pick up its sixth straight division title. West Union closed out its division slate on Wednesday with a 6-5 win at home against Ingomar to finish a perfect 8-0 in district play.

  • Eagles win at Myrtle

Hunter Jennings had two hits to lead West Union in a 6-2 win at Myrtle on Tuesday.
The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, with Chase Bogue, Caleb Jennings and Alex Work bringing in runs.
Andrew Childers and Hunter Jennings would extend that lead in the fifth, with Childers hitting and RBI single and Jennings an RBI double, making it 5-0.
The Hawks scored their first runs in the fifth, placing runners on the corners for Anthony Lipsey. Taylor Hogue stole home before Lipsey brought in Austin Floyd on a single.

  • New Albany's Spears signs with Mississippi State

For one New Albany basketball standout, her storied career took the next step on Wednesday, signing to play at Mississippi State.

Jazmine Spears has entertained fans for the last five seasons, serving as the backbone for the Lady Bulldogs and leading her team to a 4A state title in 2011. The senior will keep the same colors and mascot as she heads to State in the fall.

  • Favorite time of the day

What a hard choice last Friday. It was lunch time, one of my two favorite times of the day. The other is dinner, but you probably already guessed that.

  • Choosing city leaders

The upcoming city primary election promises to be an important one with lively contests for mayor and chief of police as well as races in three of the five aldermen spots.
All of the city elections except Alderman, Ward Four, will be decided in the Democratic primary on May 7 or the runoff election May 21.

  • Baseball season winding down

Hard to believe we’re almost through the regular season for spring sports, and we have only another week before we enter the postseason for baseball and softball.
Next week presents some really good match-ups with seeding for the upcoming postseason on the line.
This is also the time that my head spins, trying to figure out seeding for the postseason. Because most schools keep the Maxpreps website updated, I’ll use that to break down possible seeding.

  • Urchins shut out New Site

East Union improved to 6-1 in division play, shutting out New Site, 6-0, on Tuesday.
Behind the efforts of Austin Sanders on the mound, the senior held the Royals to five hits and had five strikeouts in the win.

  • All-County basketball team selected

County coaches met last Thursday, selecting this year’s All-County basketball team, the top players from each school this season.
Headlining  the girls’ selections is Mississippi State signee Jazmine Spears, who led the Lady Bulldogs to a county tournament title, regular season division title and a playoff appearance.
The senior led the Lady Bulldogs, averaging 27.8 points per game and 14.9 rebounds per game. She is joined on the All-County team by teammate Erin Michael Carter.

  • Lady Eagles defeat Myrtle

West Union came one step closer to the division title in Region 2-1A, defeating Myrtle, 10-3 on Monday.
