  • Where are the Wild Things? At the UC Heritage Museum

     A plethora of wild animals are on exhibit at the Union County Heritage Museum from December 1, 2008 to January 10, 2009.  Union County native Chico Foote is the reason these animals are on display. He was a big game hunter and traveled extensively with a quest to hunt the largest and most vicious animals any hunter can encounter.

    Other Union Countians like big game hunter and millionaire, Paul Rainey and national dog trainer and hunter Clyde Morton of Myrtle could relate to the adventure of big game hunting as well as a love for animals rare and exotic.

  • NAHS cheerleaders prepare for UCA

    With months of preparation now behind them, the New Albany Cheerleading squad is ready to showcase their talent, as they will be competing in the UCA Dixie Regional Competition this Saturday, December 6 at the Bancorp South Center in Tupelo.

    The squad has already placed first in the 4A Large Division in the MHSAA North Regional, and are looking to place at the state level this year.

  • NAHS picks up another win, Myrtle falls at Shaw

    NAHS 60 Ripley 50

    Ripley attempted to rally in the fourth, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to hold on to remain undefeated, downing the Lady Tigers 60-50 Tuesday night.

    Ripley scored 20 in the final frame, after only putting up 30 in the first three quarters. New Albany was consistent in their scoring throughout the game to pick up their ninth win.

    Meisha Strong led all scorers with 27 for the Lady Tigers, while Bella Ruckes added 12.

    For New Albany, Jasmine Spears led the Lady Dawgs with 19, while Kebrina Lucas added 15 and Nicha Washington 14.

  • Myrtle, NAHS fall on the road

    Ripley 87 NAHS 62

    The Bulldogs were unable to find the basket early, as they fell in a hole and could not comeback versus Ripley Tuesday night.

    Searching for consistancy, Kareem Brown New Albany in scoring for the second game in a row, as his 13 paced the Bulldog offense. Cameo mabry added 11 on the night.

    Ripley held a 45-23 advantage at the half, and another 23 in the third put the game out of reach for New Albany, who are now 3-5 on the year.

    Acie Vane led the Tigers with 24,while Tyrie Berry had 14 and Tyson Rutherford 10.

  • West Union continues winning ways in bowling

    West Union continued on their winning ways early in this bowling season, as both the boys and girls defeated South Panola.

    On the girls side, the Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Tigers 5-3, despite the high game and high series both coming from South Panola.

    Marlee Goforth held both titles in the match, as she bowled a 145 for the high game, and a 390 for the high series. Jessica Clark led the Lady Eagles, as she bowled a 358 series.

  • New Albany receives State AG's opinion on rezoning issue

    The State of Mississippi Attorney General has upheld an earlier verbal opinion given to the city of New Albany regarding a requested suspension of a building permit issued to Lehman-Roberts Asphalt Company in June.

    In accordance with statements made by New Albany City Attorney Bobby Carter during an Aug. 5 board of aldermen meeting, the Attorney General's office has issued an official written opinion that the city of New Albany would not have had legal grounds to suspend the permit issued based on evidence given by Carter's office.

  • Lady Bulldogs remain perfect

    A pleasant surprise for New Albany fans has been the recent play of the girls basketball team. Currently 8-0 with two games until division play, the Lady Bulldogs have performed well with a young team. Their most recent win came at Corinth last Tuesday, 70-60.

    Corinth held a two-point lead after the first quarter, and led by one at the half. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Corinth in the third to take the lead and pick up their eighth win.

  • County school district receives Beacon award for MCT2 performance

    The Union County School District was once again recognized among the top school districts in the state of Mississippi when it was the recipient of the Lighthouse School Leader Beacon Award in late November.

    The award, which the school district has been honored with two out of the past four years, was accepted by Union County Superintendent Ken Basil, School Board President Johnny Rakestraw and board member Dr. James Bryson during the Mississippi School Board Association Fall Leadership Conference in Jackson.
