  • NA cruises past Lafayette, EU and Myrtle pick up wins

    New Albany 60 Lafayette 25

    The Bulldogs gave new meaning to the saying kick them while they're down, as New Albany easily handled the winless Commodores of Lafayette, 60-25 Monday night.

    New Albany opened the game strong, and held the 'Dores scoreless in the first frame, while piling on 15 points, led by Malcolm Spears' two three pointers.

    Spears opened the second with another three, and Lafayette scored their first basket at the 5:10 mark in the second, as a field goal by Demarius Madkins made it 19-3.

    Vardaman 77  West Union 60

    Wesley Jumper scored 30 and Luke Wait added 10 as West Union dropped a 77-60 decision to the Vardaman Rams in the boys' consolation game on Saturday.  Sergio Prescott lead Vardaman with 29 points.

    The Lady Eagles' tough summer schedule helped Kimberly Jumper and West Union stay cool, calm, and collected in final seconds of their thrilling 42-41 victory over the North Pontotoc Lady Vikings to claim the championship of the North Pontotoc Invitational Tournament.

  • NAHS defeats Lafayette, improves to 6-1 on the year.

    The Lady Bulldogs improve to 6-1 on the year, as they traveled to Lafayette and defeated the Lady Commodores 4-1 Saturday.

    Stephanie Fernandez had two goals in the winning effort, while Jenna Davis and Randi Stevens scored as well for New Albany.

    Assisting on the goals for the Lady Bulldogs was Callie Creekore with two, Kellie Skinner with one and Fernancez with an assist as well.

  • Union County Blues Musicians honored with marker

    Blues musicians and Union Countians Sam Mosley, Bob Johnson and Billy Ball were all commemorated with a Mississippi Blues Trail Marker erected in their honor. The Mississippi Blues Commission is erecting 140 blues trail markers across the state of Mississippi and the one in New Albany is the 60th marker to be erected. On Monday, December 8, 2008 in New Albany at 110 Cleveland Street in front of the Union County Heritage Museum, there was a celebration honoring the three musicians.

  • From student to published author

    Humbled 17-year-old New Albany High School student Patricia Wiseman has done something at an early age that some writers work their lifetime to accomplish: publish a novel.

    The day before Thanksgiving break she received a package in the mail and it contained her first novel, bound and complete.

    “I was shocked to actually see my writing in an actual book.  I hope this book becomes a success. What’s shocking is that I haven’t even finished with high school yet, and I already have a piece of writing in print,” said Wiseman.

  • Myrtle further discusses new trash ordinance

    A quiet month called for a short meeting of the Myrtle Aldermen on December 4. Alderman David Brown sat in place of Mayor Joe Rials, who was out of town on business.

    The Aldermen reviewed the property violations from November, and Town Clerk Marie White set pointed out three serious violations that attorney Joe Davis needed to look over before bills could be issued. These include David Alberson for $464.07, Calvin Huffstickler for $623.85 and O.D. Hester for $464.07. No new violations were brought forward for December.

  • Union County Supervisors to execute deed for purchase of Littlejohn property

    A deed will be drawn up soon for the recently purchased Littlejohn Law Firm office building, located at  108 and 110 East Main Street, across the street from the Chancery Court building.

    Board attorney Thad Mueller said, “(County Architect) Hubert Foley surveyed the property and I am going to draw up the deed.”

    The board authorized Board President Danny Jordan to execute the deed using survey descriptions for the Littlejohn property.

  • NA Rotary Club hosts "Christmas in New Albany" Dec. 11, 12

    It is the time of year for giving, celebrating and enjoying the wonders and sights of the holiday season. In conjunction with getting in the holiday spirit, the concert "Christmas in New Albany" will be held Thursday, December 11 and Friday, December 12 at the Cine Theater (Magnolia Civic Center) in downtown New Albany at 7 p.m. both nights.
