  • Santas, gifts, newspapers

Yes, ‘tis the uniquely American season for mistletoe and holly, tinsel and toys, Santas and sleighs, carols and crèches, good cheer and anachronistic poetic contractions.

‘Twas a time when Christmas in America was a less hectic season. Why, the Puritans even banned its celebration. But the Dutch brought their bearded Sancte Claus or Sinterclaas to New Amersterdam, where the children would find candies and nuts and trifling trinkets in their shoes or stockings. The Germans brought a similar tradition with their Pelze-Nicol.

  • Santa letters soon to be thrown in U.S.P.S. trash

As we were all feverishly typing the Dear Santa letters for the Santa Letter’s section that was published this past Friday, our circulation manager received a telephone call from the postmaster here in New Albany. He had called to advise us that in the future the postal service can no longer forward Santa letters addressed to the North Pole or just to Santa to the newspaper so we can share them with our readers.

  • Sharing at Christmas provides a blessing to all of those who make it happen.

For over 30 years, The New Albany Gazette and staff have had the privilege of organizing and contributing to an effort to provide food boxes to those of our neighbors who are in need during the Christmas season. This year has been no different. We have been blessed with this opportunity to share, along with all of you who have contributed so unselfishly to your Union County neighbors.

  • A nation of many faiths

For many Christians there exists a prevailing mythology that America was established as a Christian nation. They envision the founders sitting around trying to put the language of Scripture into the framework of the Constitution. But the myth, while powerful and certainly durable in the imaginations of many believers, is just that—imaginary.

  • Spears, Gilbert highlight in-county showdown

When Myrtle takes the court at New Albany this Friday night, all eyes will be on the play of two individuals in particular. The shocking part about this is that they're also the youngest members of their respective teams.

Aspriona Gilbert of Myrtle and Jazmine Spears for New Albany have created a lot of buzz so far this season, as both are among the leading scorers and rebounders for their respective teams. Why is this such a surprise? Simple, Gilbert is a freshman for the Lady Hawks, while Spears is only in the 8th grade.

  • Union County to begin football coach search

Just as it gave Union County Superintendent Ken Basil authority to begin the search for a band director in the month of December, the Union County School Board gave Basil authority to begin a search for a football coach during January's monthly meeting.

After deciding to develop an all-county Jr. High football team, with the idea of beginning football practice later this spring, the board gave Basil the go-ahead to find a coach to oversee the development of such a team.
