  • Our attitude about poverty

I recently wrote a column suggesting that as Christians we could a better job finding ways to collectively provide assistance to the least of these among us. The responses were swift and angry. I was accused of distorting the Bible in order to advance a liberal socialist agenda.

I thought I was just quoting Jesus.

Then I wrote a column suggesting that the charitable impulse that appears each Christmas is an attitude that should characterize the Christian life year round.

  • The impulse to silence dissent

The arrest of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich on corruption charges drives home the point that political malfeasance is not the sole possession of any one political party. There are those all along the political spectrum who are willing to sell out principle for power and money. Although given the depth and cynicism of Blagojevich’s behavior, if convicted, he may actually give corruption a bad name.

  • A Christmas prayer

Lord, first of all, thank you for the careful and creative way in which you have designed this world. You have made this planet a marvelous place, filled with life and beauty.  It is a privilege to recognize that we humans are a part of your amazing invention.

  • New Year hopes and prayers

New Year’s celebrations have traditionally become a time for us to gather up our hopes and prayers for the coming year and express them in resolutions. I confess to being a resolution maker.

Not just about the little things like losing weight and going to the gym more. But also prayers and hopes about big things, global things. So, I thought I would share a few with you. Here are some of my prayers and hopes for the coming year. There are ten of them.

  • Prayers of the Inauguration

Jesus’ disciples approached him once and said to him, “Teach us to pray.” It was common practice in the ancient world for teachers to instruct their followers in all forms of spiritual practice. According to the New Testament, what Jesus offered in response to their request is what we now call the Lord’s Prayer.

  • NA native turns area fields into fields of dreams

With baseball season around the corner, area teams are preparing for the upcoming year. With practices taking place and players working on their game, very few think of the other aspects that need work as well.

Braving the frigid temperatures of last week, New Albany resident Charles Brunetti and his staff are hard at work, preparing New Albany High's baseball field for the 2009 season. From laying clay and laser grading to even the infield with the outfield, a lot of preparation and work goes into managing a baseball field.

  • WU swept at Ashland, Lady 'Dawgs 18-1

    Ashland 56

    West Union 50 (g)

Claire Wilkerson had 15 on the night, but the Lady Eagles fell short on the road, losing 56-50 at Ashland on Tuesday.

After falling behind 15-9 in the first quarter, West Union was able to cut the deficit to one at the half, as Ashland led 18-17.

The Lady Eagles were able to tie the game in the third frame, but Ashland had a productive 22-point fourth quarter, which propelled them for the win.

April Rollins had 13 on the night for the Lady Eagles, who fall to 16-7 on the year, 1-2 in division play.

  • Ingomar splits slate at Houlka

Coach Norris Ashley and Coach Jimmy Guy McDonald have one of the state's longest running friendly-rivalries dating all the way back to their semi-pro baseball playing days.

The two "Legend of the Hills" have a combined record of 3031-1799 and 13 State Championships, but Tuesday night they were focused on gaining an advantage in positioning for the quickly approaching division tournament.

  • Hawks, Lady 'Dawgs win tourney crowns

Myrtle held off a late surge from Ingomar to claim the Union County boys' championship behind gutsy performances from Russ Yates and David Wilson in place of injured guard Justin Jordan.

Yates and Wilson scored 15 points each in the Hawks 62-59 victory over the Falcons.

"I thought Russ did a tremendous job, David played well, and Beau had a great game for us, but we had a lot of guys come off the bench to play well for us too… that's what it's going to take for us the rest of the year," Coach Jonathan Ashley.

  • Urchins hang with Hawks, Ingomar handles 'Dawgs

    New Albany 63

    Ingomar 40 (G)

New Albany's student section chanted "four more years" in response to Jazmine Spears' terrific showing, as the Lady 'Dawgs downed Ingomar 63-40 Friday night.

The eighth grader led all scorers on the night, tallying 27 and setting up their rematch with Myrtle for the county championship.

An early three-point shot by Tierra Lucas gave New Albany the 9-3 advantage in the third, and it was never close, as the Lady Bulldogs led throughout the game.
