    Sherman’s latest addition to the Fire Department is its Rescue truck which is referred to as Sherman Rescue One.  This emergency medical service special operations unit vehicle is equipped with Jaws of Life, airbags for lifting vehicles to pull someone trapped beneath, hazmat suits, and more.  The Sherman Fire Department has 25 members of which several are volunteer certified.  Seventeen of those are Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) for the medical calls and 9-1-1 life threatening situations. The police department also responds to these calls.

  • Five or six days, postal delivery still needed

    Recent reports that the United States Postal Service may cut out one day per week of mail delivery is due, according to John E. Potter, postmaster general, to dwindling mail volume and rising costs. His announcement did not cause very much surprise among most postal customers across the nation, but did plant seeds of concern among those who rely on the post office for all their deliveries.

  • NA School District readies for budget cuts

    Like many other public school districts in the state of Mississippi, the New Albany School district will begin feeling the effects of recent budget cuts in education due to Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour's plan to cut spending in the coming days.

    According to New Albany School District Assistant Superintendent Jackie Ford, New Albany schools' administrators have been preparing for such cuts all year.

  • Pilot Club, Sheriff's dept. work together to be lifesavers

    Project Lifesaver is a project in Union County that was created to help find people when they are lost, especially children and adults with autism or special needs or Alzheimer’s patients. The Union County Sheriff’s Department, in conjunction with the New Albany Pilot Club, purchased new equipment recently.  The new equipment purchased was 100 bands for the Project Lifesaver bracelets, two receivers, seven transmitters, two mobile antennas and two hand-held antennas.

  • Union Co. Schools hold tryouts for "Oklahoma!"

    The wagon trains will be heading east to Union County this Spring when the Union County School District hosts the Rodgers & Hammerstein production of "Oklahoma!" the weekend of April 17 and 18 at the Magnolia Civic Center.

    The musical will star many of the school district's students from East Union, Myrtle, Ingomar and West Union and is being directed by Clint Reed, recently hired by the county school board to produce and direct the musical.

  • Mary Kathryn Bryan and William Vardaman Hall to wed Feb. 6

    Travis and Angie Bryan and the late Mary Bryan of Blue Springs are proud to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter Mary Kathryn Bryan of Blue Springs to William Vardaman Hall of New Albany.

    The bride-elect's grandparents are Roger and Mary Lynn Rakestraw of Blue Springs and Evelyn Bryan and the late Baremore Bryan Jr. (Lefty) of Guntown, Miss.

    She graduated from East Union Attendance Center in 2007 and now works at BanCorp South in Sherman.

  • Confederates put away Bulldogs in first round

    The Bulldogs saw their season come to an end in the first round of the 4A playoffs Tuesday night as they fell on the road at Caledonia, 5-1.

    Tucker Holmes scored the lone goal for NAHS, as the 'Dawgs were able to keep the score tied at the half, 1-1. Taylor Chism notched the goal for the Confederates in the first half.

  • Lady Falcons drop heartbreaker, boys gain momentum

    Ingomar ran the final play to perfection as Maggie Cobb nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer, but unfortunately for the Lady Falcons, DiDi Miller took care of business from the free throw line a few seconds earlier to give the Calhoun City Lady Wildcats a four-point advantage that led to the crucial 53-52 division victory.
