  • Pig-in-the-poke may turn out as no pig at all

It’s hard to believe, but here we are, once again, $80,000 later, still enduring presentations from planning consultants about a comprehensive plan,. This time it was for Union County, but as usual, the report isn’t finished and the consultants are still “asking for our input.”

  • Highway money coveted by non-profits, developers

Only four days into the year 2009 and 16 days before a new president is sworn in with a monied plan to salvage our economy, the “Economic Development is everything” people of Northeast Mississippi have already devised a plan to squeeze more money out of the Federal bailout and position it where only they can access or use it. An example of planning that should not take place, but when it does, it demonstrates how little these people regard this state, this country and the people in it.

  • Which is it gonna be, highways or cake?

I failed to pay as much attention as I should have when a lot of the material about the history of Europe was being covered, so I have less than a working knowledge of the events of over there that ultimately influenced things over here. As a result of that inattention in school, as I research or try to make comparisons of today’s events with things that have happened before, I find myself covering some high school and college work I vaguely remember.

  • Litterbugs trashing roads throughout Union County

After making major inroads toward a goal of a litter-free New Albany and Union County, the recent rains have washed up trash, particularly on county roads, that either was missed this past summer or has been contributed by inconsiderate motorists during the fall and so far this winter season.

  • The first day

With our country in the grip of economic turmoil and at war in two different places at the same time, Barack Obama took the oath of office Tuesday and began his tenure as America’s 44th president. Now comes the “hundred day watch.”

Ever Since Franklin Roosevelt pushed through sweeping reforms and new government programs in the opening months of his presidency, pundits and critics have used the first hundred days of a president’s term as a sort of score card.

OLE MISS WON THE COTTON BOWL!!

Sharon cooked supper for all Ray Shirley’s family. Sharon bought and Malcolm cooked, but Sharon fixed his salad and rolls. All of Cyndi and Eddie’s family didn’t come, just them and Mende, Martha, Mark, Jay and Adrianne were here. It was a nice night.

New Year’s Eve night Belinda, Gary and Nancy and Malcolm and me played “Phase 10” until a little before 12:00. Malcolm won both games.

I had to go to the wound center Friday. My foot is still not well.

  • Ellistown Breezes

Brother Mike started back with two services Sunday before last and there was a good crowd for both services.  Aileen Roberts was scheduled for special music in the early service and Heather Roberts (Brother Chad’s wife) was scheduled for the second service. Since Brother Chad’s mother was worse, of course they were not present so Brother Dexter put a “Spur-of-the-moment Quartet” together, consisting of Walter Moore, Brother Mike Powell, Dexter Griggs and Ken Briggs.  They were very good.  Then Brother Mike brought a message from Psalms.
