  • The first day

     With our country in the grip of economic turmoil and at war in two different places at the same time, Barack Obama took the oath of office Tuesday and began his tenure as America’s 44th president. Now comes the “hundred day watch.”

       Ever Since Franklin Roosevelt pushed through sweeping reforms and new government programs in the opening months of his presidency, pundits and critics have used the first hundred days of a president’s term as a sort of score card.

    1 1 ¾ cup all-purpose flour

    ¼ teaspoon salt

    1 teaspoon baking soda

    ¾ cup (1 ½ sticks) butter

    or margarine,

    1/4 cup buttermilk

    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    walnuts

    OLE MISS WON THE COTTON BOWL!!

        Sharon cooked supper for all Ray Shirley’s family. Sharon bought and Malcolm cooked, but Sharon fixed his salad and rolls. All of Cyndi and Eddie’s family didn’t come, just them and Mende, Martha, Mark, Jay and Adrianne were here. It was a nice night.

    New Year’s Eve night Belinda, Gary and Nancy and Malcolm and me played “Phase 10” until a little before 12:00. Malcolm won both games.

    I had to go to the wound center Friday. My foot is still not well.

  • Ellistown Breezes

    Brother Mike started back with two services Sunday before last and there was a good crowd for both services.  Aileen Roberts was scheduled for special music in the early service and Heather Roberts (Brother Chad’s wife) was scheduled for the second service. Since Brother Chad’s mother was worse, of course they were not present so Brother Dexter put a “Spur-of-the-moment Quartet” together, consisting of Walter Moore, Brother Mike Powell, Dexter Griggs and Ken Briggs.  They were very good.  Then Brother Mike brought a message from Psalms.

    I’d like to start off this week by saying a huge congratulation to the students who competed in the National Geographic Bee this year. 90 students in 6-8 grades competed in the preliminary rounds, 27 students competed in a tiebreaker for the last two spots in the final round of 10. The students in the final round were: Mark Robbins, Will Robbins, David Kavistan, Will Golding, Kurt Hickey, Roman Jeter, Jake Broussard, Kristen Olson, Walter Smith, and John Wise. Here are the final places: Kristen Olson, 3rd place, Walter Smith, 2nd place, and John Wise, 1st place.

  • NA aldermen races heat up

    Three more New Albany citizens have thrown their hats into the ring for local city elections this coming Spring, including one more incumbent, Ward Three Alderman Tommie Beasley, who qualified on Jan. 15 to run for re-election.

    Also qualifying for the Ward Three race as a Democrat on Friday, Jan. 23 was Chris Buford of 1245 Martintown Rd.  Larry Dykes of S. Central Ave. also qualified to run as a Democrat in the Ward Three race earlier this month.

    Hello my fellow Urchins!  It is hard to believe that we are almost finished with the month of January!

    We would like to extend congratulations to those who participated in the county-wide Reading Fair at Myrtle on Friday, January 23rd. Among first place winners were Carol Coker, Savannah Alexander, Anna Clayton, and Savanna Harlow. They will compete in the Regional competition in Oxford. Way to work hard participants!  Also, congrats go out to Jacob Pilcher for taking first in the school-wide Geography Bee on Friday!  Good job!

    When I sat down to write a little news as I usually do the word change kept crossing my mind.  I don’t know why but the more I thought about it the more evidence I could see in life’s pathway.  The schedule of the day before one may already be in place but some things could happen very quickly and some of the plans had to be changed.  The schedule had been interrupted which required revision of some of the days activities.  It is in the pathway of life.  Some of the plans have to be rescheduled because of circumstances beyond our control had interfered a

    Sherman’s latest addition to the Fire Department is its Rescue truck which is referred to as Sherman Rescue One.  This emergency medical service special operations unit vehicle is equipped with Jaws of Life, airbags for lifting vehicles to pull someone trapped beneath, hazmat suits, and more.  The Sherman Fire Department has 25 members of which several are volunteer certified.  Seventeen of those are Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) for the medical calls and 9-1-1 life threatening situations. The police department also responds to these calls.
