  • Scott named Union County District Teacher of the Year

    Lesa Scott, 6th grade language arts teacher at West Union Attendance Center, just received the award for West Union Teacher of the Year and Union County Teacher of the Year.

    “Concerning the West Union award, I was overwhelmed. To be chosen by your peers is a huge compliment. When I got the award for the county teacher of the year, I was humbled. I am very grateful. There are few times that you get an award for doing something you love to do,” said Scott.

  • Hampton heads for New Albany

    Those passing by the west side of the intersection of HWY 78 and HWY 30 W. may have noticed construction beginning next to Wendy's.  According to New Albany Building Inspector Mike Armstrong, this will be the new location of a Hampton Inn.  Charmaine Easie-Samuels, representative for Hampton Hotels confirmed that a 75-room hotel is being built at this location.  No projected end date for the project has been set yet.

  • There are no dull moments if you’re paying attention

    The famous Depression Era comedian/cowboy, Will Rogers, once told a story about a mountain lion who, after eating an entire bull, felt so good he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him. The moral to Mr. Rogers’ story is that when you’re full of bull, keep your mouth shut.

    The Sherman Church of Christ youth went over to Wes and Raleigh Bass’ home after evening services, Feb. 1, to watch the Super Bowl.

    A singing school for the young men of Sherman Church of Christ started Sunday afternoon, Feb. 1, at 5 p.m. and was led by Ray Kennedy.

    A birthday party was held for Bro. Joe Connell held Wed. night, January 28, at Sherman Church of Christ.

    A 2nd birthday party will be held for Jacob Gore Saturday, Feb. 7, with a “Thomas, the train theme,” at the Sherman Church of Christ fellowship building.

    Congratulations to Morgan Shettles and to Whitney Owens who were on the President’s List at ICC for the fall semester. 

    Congratulations to Daniel Robbins and to Landon Kidd who were on the Chancellor’s Honor Roll at the University of Mississippi for the fall semester. 

    Featured on TV’s Mississippi Crossroads were Native American artifacts collected by local anthropologist Don Browning.  These items were on display at the Town Square Museum at the time of the broadcast.

    Well, another new month for this new year has crept in on the calendar and what it holds weather wise remains to be seen yet.  It came in like a lamb-beautiful and fair at the beginning.  Then quickly in the afternoon clouds began rolling in and there may be some more falling weather to move in and more turning up the heat in the house for comfort.  Whatever comes, there is not a thing humans can do about these conditions.  Only take whatever comes our way and count the blessings as they come our way.

    I hope everyone has had a great week so far.  The students here at East Union have been trying to get to Friday.  We are ready for the weekend.

    The Lady Urchins competed in the Robertson’s Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 31.  They fell short in the game against Hickory Flat.  The tournament was held for the “Cancer Relay for Life.”  All the money earned was given for finding a cure to cancer.

  • EU-Myrtle celebrate senior night

    East Union's foul trouble could have cost them the game, but missed free throws and easy baskets came back to haunt the Lady Bearcats, as East Union held on for the 63-52 win on senior night.

    The Lady Urchins committed 10 fouls in the third quarter after building a 34-22 halftime lead. Up 46-28 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Baldwyn worked their way back into the game, and cut East Unions lead to eight with 2:32 remaining in the game.
