  • Eastern Lights

    Here I am once again trying to fill a gap that has been broken once again.  My dear friend Johnnie Bell has been diagnosed with cancer and has had surgery and will be having chemo in the near future.  She will be unable to write community news so I will attempt to write once again at least for awhile.

    Betty Smith and Loretta Easley visited recently with Mary Etta Hill and Ola Messer.  They are both up and around the  house and love phone calls and company.

    Happy birthday to Floyd Todd who will celebrate February 7.  May you have many more. Floyd will celebrate his 85th birthday.

    A baby shower for Stephanie Moody Coomber and a birthday party for Breezy Moody were celebrated at the home of Rodney and Gretchen Moody and boys Taylor and Matthew, Saturday, January 31.  Twenty-eight family members attended the special occasion.

    A baby shower was held on Wednesday, February 4 at North Pontotoc for April and Matt Lindsey.  They are expecting a baby girl, Madysen Grace in March.

    Oops, I goofed again!  Margaret Murphree’s mother was having surgery, not Margaret. Sorry Margaret!

    Tim and LaCosta Watson are proud parents of a new baby, Avery Lane Watson, born at 8:06 P.M. on January 23, 2009, weighing 10 lb. and 4 oz. and was 19 ¾ inches long.  The baby is welcomed by big brother, John Hayden, age 4. Grandmother, Mary Nowlin is very proud also.

    I am not a dedicated football fan, but yes I did watch most of the Super Bowl and certainly “got my money’s worth.”  What a game!  No wonder the headlines on sports page this morning (Monday) read “Holmes sweet Holmes.”  Player Holmes (10) on Pittsburgh Steelers caught the  football in he air, held his feet together, and the ball in his hands until he hit the ground.  HE knew he was very near the line, and also knew he would fall flat on his face if he landed in that position but he chose to land face down which made the final touchdown

    Hey all you Bullpup fans!! I hope that everybody’s doing GREAT! It seems like we’re always busy at school doesn’t it? Well it sure does to me, but I hope that everybody can keep up with the fast pace! Don’t forget that we’re NAMS and nothing’s impossible with God!

    We’re going green here at New Albany Middle School! Jonah Zahller has helped organize for recycling cans to be outside at break for each grade. One designated for plastic, and another for cans. So, no more regular trash cans… RECYCLE!! Help make the Earth greener!

  • Hawk News

    Hello again Hawk fans!  It’s basketball playoff time again.  The Lady Hawks defeated Shaw last Friday night and the Hawks defeated Booneville Saturday in the Prentiss/Union Clash.  Both teams were in action in our last regular season home game with Ripley Tuesday night at 6 p.m.  Our Seniors were also honored at the game.  The division tournament begins Monday at Hickory Flat and our Lady Hawks will face Strayhorn at 8:30 p.m.  The Hawks will play Ashland Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. at Hickory Flat.  Good luck to all Hawks!

  • The Dinner Bell

    Today’s recipes are from an old Amish Cookbook adapted from the kitchen and pantries of an old order Amish cooks.

     

    GLORIFIED RICE

     

    2 cups cooked rice

    ½ cup sugar

    1 cup pineapple

    chunks, drained

    1 cup whipping cream

     

    Combine rice, sugar and pineapple chunks. Refrigerate for at least one hour. Just before serving, whip cream and fold into rice mixture. Serves 6.

     

    POTATO CAKES

     

    2 cups leftover mashed

    potatoes

    Lil Grisham welcomed the 45 attendees to the January 20th meeting of Liberty School. Bill Wigington gave the invocation/blessing prior to the covered dish dinner.

    In the business session Joanne Gaines read minute from the December meeting and Jewel Rowan gave the financial report.

    Love is in the air at East Union and tons of activities are starting up!  On Tuesday, February 3rd, our Urchins and Lady Urchins faced Baldwyn.  After a long, hard fight, the girls added another win to their season!

  • Sherman News

    Mrs. Erma Lee Pope will be 100 on February 12.  Her children, David and Julia Gilfert, Billy and Marilyn King, and four grandchildren are hosting a birthday celebration from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, in the Sherman Baptist Church Activities Building.  All friends and relatives are invited.  No gifts, please.

    Mrs. Pope has been a member of Sherman Baptist Church for 88 years.

    The WMU will meet Feb. 13 in the home of Jane Westmoreland at 12:30 p.m.
