  • Hawks advance to the big game

    For the second time in three years the Hawks are back in the 1A State Championship game after dodging another disappointment early exit to claim a 61-52 victory over the Calhoun City Wildcats on Saturday.

    The Hawks (26-12) saw the Wildcats (22-14) battle back to take a 47-43 lead early in the fourth quarter, but a fiery timeout got Myrtle back on track.

  • Two more days to qualify and campaigning to begin

         Two more days and the qualifying will be at an end and the slate of candidates for city offices will be complete for the voter’s consideration. Now the campaigning begins.

  • Today is the day, the last day to qualify to run!

         Today is the day! Friday, March 6, 2009 is the final day for those desiring to qualify and to go through the election process to, if successful, serve their community by holding a municipal office.  There is no better way to have an impact on the city and your fellow citizens than to serve.

  • NAHS picks up wins, Lady Urchins undefeated

    Cold temperatures did not stop area softball and baseball games Monday night, as county teams suited up in several match-ups.

    East Union 8 Pine Grove 2

    A four-run sixth inning gave the Urchins a comfortable lead, as well as their fourth win of the year, defeating Pine Grove 8-2.

    Pine Grove would cut to within one run in the third, 2-1, then East Union scored six runs over three innings to pull away. The Urchins finished with 11 hits on the day with one error, while pitcher Craig Bullock only allowed four hits and Pine Grove had five errors.

  • Crawford takes over at NA Sportsplex

    Creating more opportunities while enhancing what already exists is the goal for Kevin Crawford, the new director of New Albany Parks and Recreation. With previous experience with the parks and recreation department in Pearl, Crawford is returning home to run the Sportsplex.

  • East Union Math-A-Thon raises money for St. Jude

    A St. Jude Math-A-Thon event took place during the month of February and is continuing into the first week of March at East Union Attendance Center. The Math-A-Thon helps raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a center for the research and treatment of childhood cancer and other deadly diseases. The Union County area can sponsor students participating in the Math-A-Thon by pledging an amount-per-problem or a one-time donation.

  • Ingomar school to be pilot for state vaccination plan

    Ingomar will soon become a pilot school for a Mississippi Department of Health program designed to drastically increase the state of Mississippi's vaccinations among adolescents.

    The Union County School Board voted to allow the state's Health department to use the facility for such clinics after hearing from representatives of the department Monday night.

    Tammy Clark of the Mississippi State Department of Health and Anita Lofton of the Lee County Department of Health came before the board to address the issue.

  • Supervisors approve purchase of land near fairgrounds

    The Union County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of  35.7 acres of land that lies on the eastern side of the Union County Fairgrounds for $250,000.

    Union County Board President Danny Jordan said, “We have been wanting to buy this property for a long time, so when it came up for purchase, we bought it. There are no plans for the land right now, but in the future we may talk about putting some county offices over there, but nothing is definite yet.”

  • Clandestine negotiations not passing the “smell test”

    tFor the past several weeks, I have been pondering the surprise response New Albany Mayor Tim Kent gave to interviewers when asked about improvement projects the city might consider, were he to be reelected, or should consider were the budget available. The project about which many readers and I were surprised involved the already in progress negotiations (according to Kent) with a local landowner  for six acres of land upon which to construct new public utilities offices and a police station.
