  • Ingomar school to be pilot for state vaccination plan

    Ingomar will soon become a pilot school for a Mississippi Department of Health program designed to drastically increase the state of Mississippi's vaccinations among adolescents.

    The Union County School Board voted to allow the state's Health department to use the facility for such clinics after hearing from representatives of the department Monday night.

    Tammy Clark of the Mississippi State Department of Health and Anita Lofton of the Lee County Department of Health came before the board to address the issue.

  • Supervisors approve purchase of land near fairgrounds

    The Union County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of  35.7 acres of land that lies on the eastern side of the Union County Fairgrounds for $250,000.

    Union County Board President Danny Jordan said, “We have been wanting to buy this property for a long time, so when it came up for purchase, we bought it. There are no plans for the land right now, but in the future we may talk about putting some county offices over there, but nothing is definite yet.”

  • Clandestine negotiations not passing the “smell test”

    tFor the past several weeks, I have been pondering the surprise response New Albany Mayor Tim Kent gave to interviewers when asked about improvement projects the city might consider, were he to be reelected, or should consider were the budget available. The project about which many readers and I were surprised involved the already in progress negotiations (according to Kent) with a local landowner  for six acres of land upon which to construct new public utilities offices and a police station.

  • Lady Hawks' comeback falls short versus McAdams

    Myrtle almost completed an incredible comeback only to fall short in the 1A State Semi-Final Friday night.

    The Lady Hawks faced off against one-seeded McAdams, and watched as the Lady Bulldogs raced to a 24-10 lead after the first quarter.

    Led by Dierra Gilmore with three baskets from behind the arc, McAdams connected on four three-pointers in the first frame.

  • NAHS unable to top Forest Hill

    Forest Hill was able to hold off a scrappy bunch of Lady Bulldogs to escape with a 49-38 victory in the Class 4A state tournament on Thursday.

    Back-to-back turnovers by Forest Hill (30-4) gave New Albany (27-5) a new sense of life when an offensive putback by Michah Washington made it a 41-38 game at the 2:41 mark of the fourth quarter.

    “We still had a chance with three minutes to go, but we couldn’t make the big basket when we needed to,” Coach John Stroud said.

  • Pamela Danielle Robertson and Joseph Stephen Pannell to hold shower and reception March 22

    Pamela Danielle Robertson and Joseph Stephen Pannell of New Albany were united in marriage on January 23, 2009 in Savannah, Tenn. Pamela is the daughter of Danny and Sara Robertson of New Albany and is the granddaughter of James and Lorene Tollison, Julia Robertson and the late Roy Robertson. Joseph is the son of Janny and Dwayne Pannell of the Jacinto community and he is the grandson of the late Ottis and Alma Stevens and the late Dee and Nettie Pannell. The shower will be held on March 22, 2009 at 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church CAC Building in Union County.

  • Birth of Addison Lynn Chandler

    Will and Carrie Chandler of Saltillo are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Addison Lynn Chandler. Addison was born on Friday, February 13, 2009, at the Women’s Hospital in Tupelo, Miss. She weighed 7 lbs., 6 oz. Her maternal grandparents are Susan Martin Feather and the late Dr. Ronald Lynn Feather of New Albany.  Paternal grandparents include Margaret Ann Chandler of Starkville and Billy and Karen Chandler of Madison. Her great grandparents are Frenchie Feather of Saltillo, Louise Gordon of Canton, and Horace and Nellie Jean Harned of Starkville.

    Derek and Buffy Minor of Ingomar proudly announce the birth of their daughter Sophie McKynze Minor, born on 8:24 a.m. on February 16, 2009 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Union County. She weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces and was 19 inches long. She was welcomed home by two older sisters Lily-Grace, age 10, and Meridith, age 4. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Goudy of Ingomar and Kim Coker of Abbeville. She is the great-granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. V. C. Goudy of Ingomar, the late Mr. and Mrs. Jr. Rakestraw of Wallerville and Mr. and Mrs. George Minor of Ecru.

    Nylaijah Malai Smith celebrated her second birthday on February 17, 2009. She is the daughter of Nashika Smith and Mantle Brown, both of New Albany. She has two brothers named Isaac Smith and Artavious Smith and one sister named Nataviuna Smith. She is the granddaughter of Jeffie Smith, Patricia Smith, Catresia Jones, and James Jones. Her great-grandparents are Everlina Smith, Katherine Brown, and Danell Brown. Her party was a Chuck-E-Cheese party. Nylaijah loves church, likes to sing, and does drama in the church with the drama team.
