    Today’s recipes are from  “Best of the Best from Mississippi” cookbook, published by Quail Ridge press in Brandon, MS. editors Gwen Mckee and Barbara Mosely. These ladies have visited every state and published a cookbook from each one. At one time I owned that entire set, but when the column stopped I donated them to the local library.  But of course I had to keep my own state’s cookbook.     As I write to you this week, I am reminded of so many words I hear each time someone passes from this life. He or she was such a wonderful person. Maybe we should just tell one another how wonderful or what a good cook they are or just thank them for being a friend. Too many times we wait and then it is too late. As the old song goes, "Wonderful things of folks are said after they have passed away. Give them the roses while they live trying to cheer them on, useless the flowers that you give after the soul is gone." Call someone today.

    Congratulations to Scott and Stephanie Coomer and Anna Grace on the birth of their son and brother, Will Presley Coomer who weighed 8 lbs. He was born Wednesday, February 11. Proud grandparents are Lynn and Brenda Moody and Brenda Coomer.

    Get well wishes to Gretchin Moody who had surgery on both arms a week ago. We wish you a speedy recovery and you are missed at Town Hall.

    North Pontotoc Spring pictures are scheduled for Middle School and High School on March 11 and Elementary on March 26.

    Report cards will be issued Monday March 23. Spring break is March 16-20.

    Nathan Holbrook, son of Larry Holbrook, made the President’s list. He is a student at Mississippi State University.  Nathan graduated from West Union High School. His grandmother Wanda Holbrook lives in Holly Springs. (She used to be my neighbor)

    Shelia Parker’s great-aunt, Lela McCauly is in Roselawn Nursing Home, but just for rehab because of a broken leg.

    Grayson Mitchell, Dr. and Mrs. Mitchell’s son, may have come home from the hospital. He will have to be on a respirator.

    Several missed our Valentine banquet. Maybe the cold night had something to do with our crowd. The fellowship was good, the food too and our entertainment. Randy Dunnam was supposed to sing but was only able to do one number because of a cold. His daughters filled in for him and were well received. Sela Smith, one of our own also sang and Brother Bobby brought a short devotional.

    February 27 and 28, our Youth will be attending Disciple Now weekend at Camp Hopewell. Dustin Pounders is our Youth Director with his wife, Terri helping any hwere she is needed.

  • Gardening with Tim

    Now that you have most of your heavy pruning done, it’s time to spray. A good dormant oil will help take care of pests that have made it through the winter. Be sure to spray the underside of the foliage as well as the ground around the plant. You want to make sure that when you spray with a dormant oil that the temperature will not drop below freezing for a 24-hour period. I recommend spraying with a good fungicide at this time to try to keep diseases and fungus under control. If you have roses, ARS Judge and Master Rosarian, Jimmy Moser recommends spraying with a lime sulfur spray.

    Hello again Hawk fans. The Myrtle Hawks and Lady Hawks basketball teams are both on a winning streak, baseball is finally here, and state testing will begin soon.

    The Lady Hawks defeated Shelby Broad Street and Shaw in the North Half Tournament going to state in 2nd place. Monday they played in their 1st game at the state tournament and won. They defeated the Thomastown Bulldogs with freshman Aspriona Gilbert scoring a career high 36 points, and they will play McAdams tonight in Jackson at 6:30.

  • Homestead and voter ID issues die without fanfare

         Much to the dismay of elderly and disabled Mississippians, legislation designed to alleviate some of their tax burdens died a quick death in the Ways and Means Committee of the House of Representatives. The Chairman of that committee said he had too many questions about what he referred to as a complex local tax issue, despite the fact it the legislation has already been passed by the State Senate.

  • Lady Falcons down DeSoto Central, WU wins three

    Coach Richard Byrd was hoping to have a good showing during the Tupelo Softball Association Jamboree.  He got that and then some as the Lady Falcons picked up a wave of momentum heading into division play with a 2-1 win over 5A DeSoto Central Lady Jaguars on Saturday.

    Ingomar got on the board in the bottom of the second when Shelly Grisham smashed a RBI double to the fence in left to score Maggie Cobb from first, but the sophomore wasn’t done with her big-game heroics.
