Today's News

  • Buck stops with board

The presentation last week about what first impressions visitors get of New Albany didn’t contain much of anything new or startling. It was pretty much what we’ve heard before from other groups.

  • Newsweek all but forgotten

For months the folks who own Newsweek magazine hounded me about signing up for a digital subscription I could read on my iPad or similar such gadget.

  • Vote "For" restaurants

On Tuesday, March 19, New Albany voters will decide whether they want the sale of wine and spirits to be permitted within city limits.

  • Northeast baseball plans to win 'the right way'

Northeast Mississippi Community College head baseball coach Kent Farris has a saying about results.
“Winning is not a goal of ours,” Farris said. “Winning is the result of doing things the right way.”
For Farris, doing things the right way has come in the form of a 144-141 overall record during his first six year as the head signal caller for Northeast after taking over for Ray Scott in 2007.
During that time, Northeast has qualified for the playoffs in four of the veteran coach’s six years in Booneville.

  • End of the road for standout athletes

Among the few downfalls to my job is watching the high school careers of the kids I follow come to an end. It has to happen sometime, but the longer I’ve been here, the tougher it is to witness this, especially when you’ve had a career as big as New Albany’s Jazmine Spears.
I did not make any of the girls’ opening round playoff games on Monday, because of the long distance each of the teams made for their respective first round match ups. I regret this now, as Spears’ career came to an end in the 61-60 loss at Greenwood.

  • Area girls' teams fall in first round

The three remaining girls teams in Union County saw its season come to an end on Monday, falling in the first round of the north half playoffs.
The outstanding career of New Albany’s Jazmine Spears came to an end after a heart breaking 61-60 loss at Greenwood.
Spears led the Lady Bulldogs with 29 points, 20 rebounds, and did so despite picking up her fourth personal foul late in the second quarter.

  • Falcons, Bulldogs advance

The first quarter was everything the Falcons could have hoped for. The lead built in that frame gave Ingomar the momentum needed to take an 82-52 win over Montgomery County on Tuesday.
Henry Foster seemed unstoppable, going 4-for-4 from behind the arc and posting 17 points in the first quarter, pacing the Falcons to a 31-6 lead. The second quarter went to the Hornets, who out scored Ingomar, 22-13, but Ingomar pieced together a good second half to pick up the win.

  • Five teams prepare for bowling finals

Five teams will represent Union County on Friday for the bowling state championships in Jackson. After regionals two weeks ago, the teams have prepared for the final match of the season, and each has its eye on bringing another state championship to the county.
East Union enters as the top seed for both the boys and girls, and for the teams, practice was as usual in preparation for state.

  • Northeast baseball opens season with a pair of wins

Northeast Mississippi Community College’s baseball team opened the season on Sunday, February 17 with a sweep of Southeastern Community College and Arkansas Baptist College at Harold T. White Field in Booneville.
Northeast knocked off Southeastern Community College from West Burlington, Iowa in five innings in the season opener before downing the Buffaloes of Arkansas Baptist 10-1 in the nightcap.
In the season opener against the Blackhawks, Northeast jumped on the visitors early and never let up.

  • Northeast softball opens season at Rush Invitational

Northeast Mississippi Community College women’s softball team kicked off the 2013 season in grand fashion with a pair of wins and a tie at the Rush Invitational in Meridian on February 15-16.
Northeast (2-1-1) opened the two-day affair with a 6-3 win over host Meridian in eight innings before battling undefeated Copiah-Lincoln to a 3-3 tie in the nightcap of the first day.
