The effort to improve health care in New Albany takes another step forward Saturday with the opening of a free clinic in our community.

  • East Union takes second at state

JACKSON -- A few pins separated East Union from another state championship for the school, but the Urchins and Lady Urchins had a great showing in Jackson, both reaching the finals for Class I last Friday.

  • Bulldogs' season ends at Corinth

The Bulldogs season came to an end at Corinth in the 4A north half tournament last Thursday.
New Albany, led by eight points from Jarel Lipsey, fell to the home team Warriors, 64-38.
The Warriors held a six point lead after the first quarter, 21-16, and defensively were able to hold the Bulldogs to single digit scoring in each quarter for the remainder of the game.
Raheem Sorrell led the Warriors with 18 points, followed Jazz Garner with 10 points.

  • Lions end Ingomar's season

The Falcons had the effort, but Biggersville made a few more plays in the 1A north half showdown last Thursday, resulting in a 70-62 win for the Lions.

  • Buck stops with board

The presentation last week about what first impressions visitors get of New Albany didn’t contain much of anything new or startling. It was pretty much what we’ve heard before from other groups.

For months the folks who own Newsweek magazine hounded me about signing up for a digital subscription I could read on my iPad or similar such gadget.

  • Northeast baseball plans to win 'the right way'

Northeast Mississippi Community College head baseball coach Kent Farris has a saying about results.
“Winning is not a goal of ours,” Farris said. “Winning is the result of doing things the right way.”
For Farris, doing things the right way has come in the form of a 144-141 overall record during his first six year as the head signal caller for Northeast after taking over for Ray Scott in 2007.
During that time, Northeast has qualified for the playoffs in four of the veteran coach’s six years in Booneville.

  • End of the road for standout athletes

Among the few downfalls to my job is watching the high school careers of the kids I follow come to an end. It has to happen sometime, but the longer I’ve been here, the tougher it is to witness this, especially when you’ve had a career as big as New Albany’s Jazmine Spears.
I did not make any of the girls’ opening round playoff games on Monday, because of the long distance each of the teams made for their respective first round match ups. I regret this now, as Spears’ career came to an end in the 61-60 loss at Greenwood.

  • Area girls' teams fall in first round

The three remaining girls teams in Union County saw its season come to an end on Monday, falling in the first round of the north half playoffs.
The outstanding career of New Albany’s Jazmine Spears came to an end after a heart breaking 61-60 loss at Greenwood.
Spears led the Lady Bulldogs with 29 points, 20 rebounds, and did so despite picking up her fourth personal foul late in the second quarter.
