  • Luncheon with books to tell pilot's story

    “Fly Boys,” the second book by James Bradley, will be the subject of Bill Rutledge’s presentation at the July meeting of Luncheon with Books on July 15. The book documents Japan’s motive for invading Korea and China. In the second part, the book tells the story of the Navy Pilots who knocked Japanese communications on the island of Chi Chi Jima. Among these pilots was George Bush, Sr.

    “I love reading about the history of WWII. The sacrifices these men made for their country is amazing. I have so much admiration for what they did,” Rutledge said.

  • Re-zoning hearing set for Munsford property

    The New Albany Board of Aldermen will once again deliberate on the matter of a zoning change for a controversial piece of property on Munsford Dr. during the Aug. 5 meeting.

    The aldermen approved the setting of a public hearing regarding the piece of property where Memphis asphalt co. Lehman-Roberts has intentions to relocate its Oxford plant.

    The request was submitted first to the city's zoning committee and then made to the board.

  • NA aldermen discuss prospect of spray park

    The New Albany Board of Aldermen once again raised the issue of constructing a spray park at the New Albany/Union County Sportsplex during its meeting Tuesday evening.

    The board voted to once again advertise for bids on constructing a spray park. This time, however, the cost of pouring concrete for the park will not be included in the bids.

    According to New Albany Mayor Tim Kent, the board wants to examine the possibility of finding a local business to pour the concrete, hoping that move will save the city a large sum of money on the project.

  • Myrtle aldermen send out property clean-up notices to town landowners, trailer parks

    Patrol car bids, construction debris and water tank maintenance were all on the agenda of the February Myrtle Aldermans meeting. Fleurette Ausburn, Jeanette Thomas and Carolyn McCuistion were the only three of the cities five alderman present. Mayor Joe Rials, Police Chief Jim White, Water Manager David Peeler, City Clerk Marie Tate and City Attorney Joe Davis were all present as well.

    After the meeting was opened with prayer, Thomas motioned to pay the citys outstanding warrants. McCuistion seconded.

  • PUL Alliance board approves supplier site development

    The Pontotoc-Union-Lee Alliance board approved the additional purchase of 20-plus acres of property for a potential Tier One Toyota supplier during its meeting Wednesday morning.

    According to Three Rivers Planning and Development District Director Randy Kelley, this acreage will be property that the not-as-yet-named supplier will option for future development.

  • FBC moving forward

    A maze of steel beams standing beside First Baptist Church of New Albany (FBCNA) is the framework for 20,000 square feet of education space the church hopes to be using by Nov. 2008.

    The structure will be three stories with an elevator servicing all floors. The bottom floor has been designated as an area for preschool and children.

  • Farr files motion against injunction

    Attorney A. Rhett Wise, representing Riverside Traffic Systems, Inc., of 1283 HWY 178 West in New Albany, filed a motion to intervene into the injunction against the construction of an asphalt plant on Munsford Dr.

    The owner of Riverside Traffic Systems, Inc. is Booker Farr, who also owns the 29-acre piece of property located at 1305 Munsford Drive that has been optioned for purchase by Lehman-Roberts Asphalt of Memphis, Tenn.

  • Toyota supplier headed to Union County

    A Toyota supplier is coming to Union County, UCDA Director Stephen Surles said Monday at the Union County Board of Supervisors meeting.

    The name and location of the plant will not be disclosed until a formal announcement is made, but Surles said the supplier has committed to come to the county.

    We are waiting to hear from the corporate officials at the company to see if they would like to attend the formal announcement, Surles said. This is great news for Union County.

  • Hospital supporter Dwight Williams honored in 2007 Tree of Love dedication

    Longtime church, community and hospital supporter Dwight Williams was the guest of honor at the twentieth annual Baptist Memorial Hospital Tree of Love dedication ceremony.

    Hospital Administrator James Huffman welcomed everyone to the program held inside the BMH cafeteria.

  • Hickory Flat Homecoming

    Hickory Flat Attendance Center will host its 2007 Homecoming Ceremony this Friday, Dec. 14, 2007, when the Rebels play host to Houlka. The ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the school's basketball gym. A homecoming dance will be held following the games. Pictured above is Hickory Flat Attendance Center's 2007 Homecoming Court.
