  • Union County Blues Musicians honored with marker

    Blues musicians and Union Countians Sam Mosley, Bob Johnson and Billy Ball were all commemorated with a Mississippi Blues Trail Marker erected in their honor. The Mississippi Blues Commission is erecting 140 blues trail markers across the state of Mississippi and the one in New Albany is the 60th marker to be erected. On Monday, December 8, 2008 in New Albany at 110 Cleveland Street in front of the Union County Heritage Museum, there was a celebration honoring the three musicians.

  • Myrtle further discusses new trash ordinance

    A quiet month called for a short meeting of the Myrtle Aldermen on December 4. Alderman David Brown sat in place of Mayor Joe Rials, who was out of town on business.

    The Aldermen reviewed the property violations from November, and Town Clerk Marie White set pointed out three serious violations that attorney Joe Davis needed to look over before bills could be issued. These include David Alberson for $464.07, Calvin Huffstickler for $623.85 and O.D. Hester for $464.07. No new violations were brought forward for December.

  • Union County Supervisors to execute deed for purchase of Littlejohn property

    A deed will be drawn up soon for the recently purchased Littlejohn Law Firm office building, located at  108 and 110 East Main Street, across the street from the Chancery Court building.

    Board attorney Thad Mueller said, “(County Architect) Hubert Foley surveyed the property and I am going to draw up the deed.”

    The board authorized Board President Danny Jordan to execute the deed using survey descriptions for the Littlejohn property.

  • NA Rotary Club hosts "Christmas in New Albany" Dec. 11, 12

    It is the time of year for giving, celebrating and enjoying the wonders and sights of the holiday season. In conjunction with getting in the holiday spirit, the concert "Christmas in New Albany" will be held Thursday, December 11 and Friday, December 12 at the Cine Theater (Magnolia Civic Center) in downtown New Albany at 7 p.m. both nights.

  • Where are the Wild Things? At the UC Heritage Museum

     A plethora of wild animals are on exhibit at the Union County Heritage Museum from December 1, 2008 to January 10, 2009.  Union County native Chico Foote is the reason these animals are on display. He was a big game hunter and traveled extensively with a quest to hunt the largest and most vicious animals any hunter can encounter.

    Other Union Countians like big game hunter and millionaire, Paul Rainey and national dog trainer and hunter Clyde Morton of Myrtle could relate to the adventure of big game hunting as well as a love for animals rare and exotic.

  • New Albany receives State AG's opinion on rezoning issue

    The State of Mississippi Attorney General has upheld an earlier verbal opinion given to the city of New Albany regarding a requested suspension of a building permit issued to Lehman-Roberts Asphalt Company in June.

    In accordance with statements made by New Albany City Attorney Bobby Carter during an Aug. 5 board of aldermen meeting, the Attorney General's office has issued an official written opinion that the city of New Albany would not have had legal grounds to suspend the permit issued based on evidence given by Carter's office.

  • County school district receives Beacon award for MCT2 performance

    The Union County School District was once again recognized among the top school districts in the state of Mississippi when it was the recipient of the Lighthouse School Leader Beacon Award in late November.

    The award, which the school district has been honored with two out of the past four years, was accepted by Union County Superintendent Ken Basil, School Board President Johnny Rakestraw and board member Dr. James Bryson during the Mississippi School Board Association Fall Leadership Conference in Jackson.

  • Supervisors approve purchase of new fire truck for Pinedale dept.

    The Pinedale community’s Union County Volunteer Fire Department will be receiving a new fire truck in mid-2009.

    Union County Fire Coordinator Steve Coker came before the Union County Board of Supervisors Monday and received approval on the purchase of a new fire truck.
