Project Lifesaver is a project in Union County that was created to help find people when they are lost, especially children and adults with autism or special needs or Alzheimer’s patients. The Union County Sheriff’s Department, in conjunction with the New Albany Pilot Club, purchased new equipment recently.  The new equipment purchased was 100 bands for the Project Lifesaver bracelets, two receivers, seven transmitters, two mobile antennas and two hand-held antennas.

Visitors to New Albany's Park Along the River will notice construction underway at the park's north entrance.  The construction is related to a Rural Impact grant project entitled "Sugaree's Bakery."

"This project is due to the fact that Mary Jennifer Russell bought the land adjacent to the park last year for an expansion," said New Albany Mayor Tim Kent.  "It's a $150,000 grant awarded by the Mississippi Development Authority."

Union County residents who attended Saturday’s Martin Luther King, Jr. service in the Union County Courthouse came away with a determination to decide for themselves if his "Dream" has become a reality.

"Is this the dream?" Sister Juanita Floyd, a graduate of East Union Attendance Center and local community leader.  "You be the judge."

Floyd called King a "driving force" in the mid 20th Century efforts to bring about racial equality.

The 9-1-1 distress call, the smell of smoke, the heat of flames, the weight of the 75-pound turnout gear, and the blood and adrenaline coursing through veins, is only some of what firemen experience every time they answer a call to extinguish a fire.

Firefighters at the New Albany Fire Department fight fires on a weekly, monthly and sometimes daily basis, and to keep them in practice, the chief and captains hold a monthly fire training session at Fire Station 2 on Deaton Street in New Albany.  They call this address 123 Fire Academy Lane.
