  • Sherman News

    Sherman’s latest addition to the Fire Department is its Rescue truck which is referred to as Sherman Rescue One.  This emergency medical service special operations unit vehicle is equipped with Jaws of Life, airbags for lifting vehicles to pull someone trapped beneath, hazmat suits, and more.  The Sherman Fire Department has 25 members of which several are volunteer certified.  Seventeen of those are Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) for the medical calls and 9-1-1 life threatening situations. The police department also responds to these calls.

  • NA School District readies for budget cuts

    Like many other public school districts in the state of Mississippi, the New Albany School district will begin feeling the effects of recent budget cuts in education due to Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour's plan to cut spending in the coming days.

    According to New Albany School District Assistant Superintendent Jackie Ford, New Albany schools' administrators have been preparing for such cuts all year.

    The funeral home business is vital to the growth of a small town. In the case of New Albany, this business has been in operation since the turn of the century, beginning in 1909 with Haywood Hamilton making the top floor of his hardware store a funeral home.

  • Pilot Club, Sheriff's dept. work together to be lifesavers

    Project Lifesaver is a project in Union County that was created to help find people when they are lost, especially children and adults with autism or special needs or Alzheimer’s patients. The Union County Sheriff’s Department, in conjunction with the New Albany Pilot Club, purchased new equipment recently.  The new equipment purchased was 100 bands for the Project Lifesaver bracelets, two receivers, seven transmitters, two mobile antennas and two hand-held antennas.

  • Union Co. Schools hold tryouts for "Oklahoma!"

    The wagon trains will be heading east to Union County this Spring when the Union County School District hosts the Rodgers & Hammerstein production of "Oklahoma!" the weekend of April 17 and 18 at the Magnolia Civic Center.

    The musical will star many of the school district's students from East Union, Myrtle, Ingomar and West Union and is being directed by Clint Reed, recently hired by the county school board to produce and direct the musical.

  • Local entities to move water, sewer and gas lines near Park Along the River

    Visitors to New Albany's Park Along the River will notice construction underway at the park's north entrance.  The construction is related to a Rural Impact grant project entitled "Sugaree's Bakery."

    "This project is due to the fact that Mary Jennifer Russell bought the land adjacent to the park last year for an expansion," said New Albany Mayor Tim Kent.  "It's a $150,000 grant awarded by the Mississippi Development Authority."

  • NA Mayoral candidates speak out on city needs

    While qualifying for municipal elections only began three short weeks ago, the race for mayor of New Albany already has two candidates vying for the office - both of whom already have spoken out on their visions for the future of New Albany.

    New Albany's Mayor Tim Kent has announced he plans to run for re-election and has qualified with the New Albany Circuit Clerk, while New Albany citizen and community leader Betsey Hamilton has announced her plans to run for the office as well.

  • "Is this the Dream?"

    Union County residents who attended Saturday’s Martin Luther King, Jr. service in the Union County Courthouse came away with a determination to decide for themselves if his "Dream" has become a reality.

    "Is this the dream?" Sister Juanita Floyd, a graduate of East Union Attendance Center and local community leader.  "You be the judge."

    Floyd called King a "driving force" in the mid 20th Century efforts to bring about racial equality.

  • Coker wins 2009 Union County Spelling Bee

    After going five rounds against 24 other competitors in the Union County Spelling Bee Monday evening, East Union 7th Grader Carol Coker spelled the winning word “pistachio," beating out 2nd place winner, West Union 7th grader Ben Neal.

    Coker will now go on to compete in the Mid-South Spelling Bee in Memphis, Tenn. in March 2009. Behind Neal  was the 3rd place winner, 8th grader Kachious Clay of New Albany Middle School.
