I’d like to start off this week by saying a huge congratulation to the students who competed in the National Geographic Bee this year. 90 students in 6-8 grades competed in the preliminary rounds, 27 students competed in a tiebreaker for the last two spots in the final round of 10. The students in the final round were: Mark Robbins, Will Robbins, David Kavistan, Will Golding, Kurt Hickey, Roman Jeter, Jake Broussard, Kristen Olson, Walter Smith, and John Wise. Here are the final places: Kristen Olson, 3rd place, Walter Smith, 2nd place, and John Wise, 1st place.

Three more New Albany citizens have thrown their hats into the ring for local city elections this coming Spring, including one more incumbent, Ward Three Alderman Tommie Beasley, who qualified on Jan. 15 to run for re-election.

Also qualifying for the Ward Three race as a Democrat on Friday, Jan. 23 was Chris Buford of 1245 Martintown Rd.  Larry Dykes of S. Central Ave. also qualified to run as a Democrat in the Ward Three race earlier this month.

When I sat down to write a little news as I usually do the word change kept crossing my mind.  I don’t know why but the more I thought about it the more evidence I could see in life’s pathway.  The schedule of the day before one may already be in place but some things could happen very quickly and some of the plans had to be changed.  The schedule had been interrupted which required revision of some of the days activities.  It is in the pathway of life.  Some of the plans have to be rescheduled because of circumstances beyond our control had interfered a

Like many other public school districts in the state of Mississippi, the New Albany School district will begin feeling the effects of recent budget cuts in education due to Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour's plan to cut spending in the coming days.

According to New Albany School District Assistant Superintendent Jackie Ford, New Albany schools' administrators have been preparing for such cuts all year.
