Well, another new month for this new year has crept in on the calendar and what it holds weather wise remains to be seen yet.  It came in like a lamb-beautiful and fair at the beginning.  Then quickly in the afternoon clouds began rolling in and there may be some more falling weather to move in and more turning up the heat in the house for comfort.  Whatever comes, there is not a thing humans can do about these conditions.  Only take whatever comes our way and count the blessings as they come our way.

As part of a Union county-wide fire safety program, firefighters with Northeast Union Fire Department will install smoke alarms in the homes of senior citizens, low income families and homes with children under 14. The detectors will be installed in owner occupied homes free of charge while supplies last.

Mississippi's rank as the leader in fire deaths in the nation could take a major blow soon and state fire officials couldn't be happier.

Four teachers from the four schools within the New Albany School District were recognized as Teacher of the Year and District Teacher of the Year for 2008-2009. The four teachers recognized were Joan Nanney from New Albany Elementary School (NAES), Ranita Callicutt, social studies teacher at New Albany Middle School (NAMS), Alicia Robinson from New Albany High School (NAHS), and Alison Moore from the School of Career and Technical Education. Moore was also awarded District Teacher of the Year.

After discussing the matter in executive session Tuesday evening, the New Albany Board of Aldermen came back into a public meeting and announced the hire of a new Park and Recreation Director.

"We've hired Kevin Crawford," New Albany Mayor Tim Kent announced.  "He has previously worked at the city of Pearl's Park and Recreation department and received his college degree in Parks and Recreation Management."

Kent went on to say that Crawford currently serves as a youth minister in Maryland and is looking to move back closer to home and family.
