An early injury did not slow down Union County’s offense, as the team won on the road at Baldwyn, 14-0, on Tuesday.
Broderick Montgomery has led the offense thus far, but an ankle sprain sidelined the running back in the first quarter.
“We were a little shaken up after his injury, and up until that point, we were driving the ball down field and had put together a good drive,” UC head coach Scott Duley said. “We were rattled, but once we calmed down, we were able to accomplish what we needed to.”
Vadale Rucker stepped up in place of the injured Montgomery, scoring both of UC’s touchdowns. Rucker first returned an interception for a touchdown and later scored on offense.
“Vadale really stepped up for us, first in the free safety spot getting the interception and again in place of Broderick,” Duley said.
Duley also credited his defensive unit for their effort in the shutout.
“They played extremely well and maybe gave up 60 or 70 yards the entire game,” he said.
Duley anticipates Montgomery to be back in the starting lineup for Union County’s next match-up, which will be on the road at Byhalia next Thursday, October 14. Both junior high and JV will play.
