“On-Star! They can unlock it. Let me get their number,” Katie said in
a composed voice as she handed me Major.
Katie and their three little ones hadn’t been at our home long enough to unload - just long enough for Major, now six months old, to wake from his nap.
It was time for a bottle filled with his formula - packed inside his
travel bag - that was locked inside Katie’s vehicle - with the keys on the
inside of the vehicle. Othel had just left for a photo assignment and
moved Katie’s car so he could leave. He had inadvertently hit the
sensitive lock button that safely secured all their essential items.
I walked outside with Major hoping to keep his mind off his scheduled
feeding. I walked around the vehicle - pulled every handle just like
Katie had done but nothing. Only the car window separated me from the
cans of formula and bottles that were in plain view, but without the key,
they were non-existent!
“Surely you can do something,” Katie said with a bit more tenseness in
her voice.
“No, I’m sorry - since you haven’t registered your new vehicle with
On-Star, we have no way of assisting you - except for calling Road
Assistance, and they’ll be there within an hour. I’m sorry I can’t be of
more help.”
I shuffled Major to my other arm and began a rocking motion. He wasn’t
understanding the bottle delay. Katie called her mother and updated the
situation so “Beba” rushed for more formula in case Road Assistance
wouldn’t be able to assist.
The saga had a happy ending. A kind Road Assistance gentleman had been
given the formula story and had rushed to help. Major had the luxury of
his feeding - just forty-five minutes later than usual.
I had a personal illustration of God’s offer of salvation. His gift
has been shown to us in His Word for all to see, and His creation declares
His presence, just as clearly as Katie’s locked vehicle in our back yard.
The key to that salvation? Jesus Christ. He is the way, the truth and
the life - our only means of entrance into the eternal home He has
prepared for His children.
