Myrtle, West Union advance to second round of 1A softball playoffs

Myrtle and West Union easily handled their opponents in the opening round of the 2010  playoffs, with both advancing to second round action.


The Lady Hawks opened their playoff run hosting Coffeeville and defeating the Lady Pirates, 15-0 in both games of the series.
Myrtle scored seven runs in the first inning of game one, with Kiana Judon, Kaylee Farr, Keely Chunn, Emily Cook, Allie Bishop and Jenna Jordan all bringing in runs.
After shutting down the Lady Pirates’ offense in the second, Judon extended the lead with her leadoff home run. Laken Butler’s two RBI single also highlighted the five-run frame.
Closing out game one in the fourth, Jenna Jordan hit a two-run home run, giving the Lady Hawks the 1-0 advantage in the series.
Myrtle won game two by the same score and advance to play Wheeler in the second round on Saturday.The Lady Hawks will host again this round.
West Union-Ray Brooks
The Lady Eagles’ title defense started on the road with West Union earning wins over Ray Brooks, 19-0 and 14-4.
In game one, West Union’s offense did not heat up until the third inning, with the Lady Eagles jumping to a 12-0 lead at that point.
Julianna Garner led West Union with four hits, including a double and a triple, while Leah Paige Goolsby had three hits, a double, triple and grand slam.
Dani Taylor had two hits with a triple, Hannah McQuary added a home run along with Gina Beth Conlee and Bailey Bogue hit a triple for West Union.
Ray Brooks managed four runs in game two, but still fell in the series, with Jodie McMillen recording multiple hits. Dani Taylor had a double and Goolsby and Garner each had a home run in the win.
West Union will host Smithville in the second round on Saturday.
