Newsome represents New Albany in all-star game

Boston Newsome ended his high school career among some elite athletes in the state; an exciting experience he is grateful for.

Playing for the North squad in the Bernard Blackwell All-Star game in Gulfport on Saturday, Newsome was a starter on offense and had the chance to play in front of several college coaches.
“It was a good time, working with the players and being among some great people,” he said. “I got a lot of reps in practice, and hearing about the other guys. In practice all week, there was a lot of intensity, and there were a bunch of really good guys on both sides of the ball.”
Newsome had two carries for the North on its first drive and also played on special teams. With national signing day coming up in February, Newsome was glad to have the chance to showcase his talents one more time for the college recruiters on hand.
“It’s looking pretty good,” Newsome said of the recruiting process. “This week at practice, we had a lot of college coaches come, and some talked to me, so we’ll see what happens come February.”
In the All-Star game, the South team scored 28 unanswered points in the second half en route to the 34-13 win. The North led 13-6 at the half after a rushing touchdown by Itawamba’s Charles Moore that tied the game at six early in the second quarter and a 42-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Starkville’s Jacoby Smith.
Demetrius Cain of Hazelhurst tied the game at the 8:10 mark of the third quarter, and with 3:21 left in the quarter, Jerome Keys gave the South the lead on a one-yard run.Thamaz Turner and Austin Watts also had touchdowns for the South in the win.
Grenada’s Payne Horan and Charleston’s Deshadrick Truly were named the offensive and defensive most valuable player’s for the North team.
Newsome’s appearance is the first for a New Albany athlete since Tainairen Elliot in the 2005-2006 school year, and the senior said he happy to be a part of the experience.
“It means a lot to me since it hasn’t been done in a while,” Newsome said. “I just wanted to prove myself during my high school career, and I’m glad I had a chance to come out here to end my high school career at this game.”
