Newsome named to All-Star team

Boston Newsome has made several personal goals for himself as an athlete, and achieved one of those on Wednesday, as he was named to the Bernard Blackwell North vs. South All-Star game.

Taking place in Gulfport on Dec. 22, the game will feature some of the best talent in the state, and Newsome joins William Lloyd of West Bolivar and Charles Moore of Itawamba in the backfield.
“When I first got in high school, I always wanted to play in an all-star game, and now I have that chance,” Newsome said on Wednesday. “Coach Price told me in class, and I didn’t show my excitement right away, but when I made it into the hallway, I was grinning from ear to ear, telling everyone I was selected.”
Newsome’s selection is the first since Tainarien Elliott in the 2005-2006 school year, and the first player under head coach Ron Price.
“There’s a lot of hard work and dedication by him, and he’s going to go and represent us well, and we’re thrilled to death for his selection,” Price said.
So far this season, Newsome has rushed for 1,434 yards and 15 touchdowns, and he is quick to give all of the credit to his offensive line and full back O.J. Hardin.
“They’ve helped me so much,” Newsome said. “I’m not the biggest guy, but I work hard and they work hard. It’s a privilege to have them as my offensive line and to have O.J. blocking for me, making the plays when they need to.”
Newsome was the first running back announced during Wednesday’s press conference, and Price was told it Newsome’s selection was a “no brainer.”
“I’ve known for the last week, and I couldn’t wait to tell him,” Price said. “The coach who informed me of his selection said that he’s the best running back in this area. We’re excited to get him on the roster, and they have a good one.”
Newsome is excited for the opportunity and looking forward to joining the All-Star team at the end of the season, but first, he and the Bulldogs will continue their quest for a Region 2-4A championship, traveling to Rosa Fort on Friday.
