The Hawks will be the county’s first team to play in their State semifinal match-up, taking on the number two seed from the South, Dexter, tonight.
The Bulldogs come into the game having lost to Durant in the South State Finals last week and boast a 22-6 record. Led by 6’1 senior Tyler Hart, Dexter had an impressive run in the South State Tournament, knocking off McAdams in the second round along with then undefeated West Lincoln to advance to the State Tournament.
Union County has a history with the Bulldogs, as Dexter last won State in 2001, defeating McAdams, and on their return trip in 2002, were defeated by Ingomar.
The Bulldogs average 71.5 points per game, led by Hart’s 17.1 per game. Before their loss to Durant, Dexter was on a 10-0 win streak, claiming the Region 8-1A Tournament.
“They’re big, athletic, quick and they like to shoot it and crash the offensive boards, so it’ll be another tough test for us, I’m sure,” Myrtle Head Coach Jonathan Ashley said.
At 21-17, the Hawks will ride their four game win streak into Jackson for the fifth year in a row with the hopes of taking the state title. It will once again be a tough test for Myrtle, as the winner of tonight’s game will face either Durant or Drew for the 1A State Championship next Thursday.
Tonight’s State Semifinal is set for an 8 p.m. tipoff, and for a complete recap of the game, check the Gazette website, newalbanygazette.com, or follow the game on Twitter, twitter.com/ezaremba1618.
