Momentum is on the side of the Bulldogs in 2009, as they are poised at a potential return to the playoffs.
After losing several seniors from last year’s squad, thoughts of rebuilding are not the minds of the ‘Dawgs despite there being 10 new starters.
“We only have two guys coming back that had significant playing time last year, and that’s Brian Gonzalez and Reed Kitchens. Reed is moving from goalie out to the field, so we have several spots that are new this year. Our skill is there, we just have to make sure we mature as a team and make sure we work as a team,” NAHS coach Taylor Nichols said.
Nichols noted the depth his has this year, as there are 17 players who can go in for the ‘Dawgs at any given time.
“We have more depth this year. There’s not one person where we feel like if we’re missing them, we’re in bad shape because I think we’ have someone who can go in their place. We have players who are key for us, who if they step up, they’re going to be big. I have my two captains, and they’re the ones I’m looking toward to be leaders for the other kids.”
Finishing second in division 1-4A last season, Nichols knows his team will again chase Pontotoc, but their goal is to take the division in 2009.
“We’re trying to not look ahead, just one game at a time, and that’s our mindset,” Nichols said. “Right now we’re focused on next Monday night and when it comes closer to division, we hope we’ll be at that point. This team has something to live up to because we made the playoffs, so they hope to accomplish that as well.”
