Literacy is important

 It was the kind of uplifting story that nearly brought tears to our eyes. We’re talking about the story in last Friday’s Gazette written by our reporter Angie Barmer about Albert Smith.

Smith’s family were sharecroppers and he often worked in the fields instead of going to class. The last year of school he completed was fourth grade and he could not read and write.

But in 1985 he discovered the newly formed Union County Literacy Council, and he’s been working on his reading and writing ever since.
