Lady Urchins hold off Hickory Flat

East Union jumped on the board early and picked up their first divisional win, defeating Hickory Flat, 7-2 on Tuesday.
The Lady Urchins opened the game with a four-run first inning with Rachel Elder, Mallory Roberts and Brittany Prewett bringing in runs.
Up 5-0 in the fourth, Hickory Flat loaded the bases off three singles and scored their first run, but East Union’s defense was able to hold off the Lady Rebels with a strong defensive effort.
“Luckily they didn’t make a couple big plays, otherwise it would have been a lot tighter of a game,” East Union head coach Andy Kirk said.
“We’ve got to hit for seven innings. We did that Saturday, but it’s a different day, different team. We’ve just got to be more consistent with the bat.”
Rachel Elder brought in the game’s final two runs off her home run in fifth inning, as East Union improves to 9-2 on the season.
“Defense played good, holding them to only two runs. Coach Gray has a good team, good athletes and they’ve been scoring some runs on people, so we’re glad to have held them to only two runs,” Kirk said. “We’d like to scratch out a few more runs as the game goes on.”
Roberts and Heather Dillard each had multiple hits, while Prewett had a double and Leach her home run. Roberts earned the win on the mound, while Kayla Kolivas picked up the loss for Hickory Flat.
The win is the Lady Urchins’ sixth in a row since losing to North Pontotoc last Tuesday (Aug. 24).
“We’re on the board now with our first division game, and we’re excited about that,” Kirk said.
East Union will take on Myrtle this week and travel to North Pontotoc next Tuesday (Sept. 7).
