The pitching of Danielle Taylor stifled the Smithville offense, holding the Lady Seminoles to only three hits in West Union’s 5-0 game one shutout on Thursday.
Both teams had offensive problems in the first two innings, but West Union broke through with their first run in the third, as Julianna Garner scored off a throwing error after reaching base on her double. The Lady Eagles also added another run in the fourth off a wild pitch that scored Hannah McQuary.
Smithville’s miscues carried into the fifth with one run scoring off a wild pitch by Kami Roberts while she was intentionally walking Leah Paige Goolsby. Another passed ball made it 4-0, and McQuary registered the game’s only earned run, plating Garner off her single.
Garner had two hits for the Lady Eagles, and Danielle Taylor allowed three hits with seven strikeouts.
The two teams will face off again on Saturday in Amory. A win for West Union will advance them to next weekend’s North Half Championship.
