Northeast Mississippi Community College’s men and women’s basketball teams were defeated on the road Monday night by Jones County Junior College in Ellisville.
In game one, the Lady Bobcats (2-2) picked up the win over the Lady Tigers (2-3) 103-67. Jones County led 65-32 at intermission but were only able to add 38 points in the second frame while Northeast scored 35.
Leading scores for JCJC included Tierro Frost, who had a game high 21 points, followed by Tanecka Carey who added 20, and Mechel’ Le Thomas’ 16. Northeast was led by Anna Brooke Page’s 16 while Chelsey Whitaker added 13.
Turnovers plagued the young Lady Tiger squad as they turned the ball over 35 times in the contest.
In the nightcap, the Tigers (2-3) forced the Bobcats (2-2) into overtime after Cody Garrett hit a three-pointer to tie the game 76-76 at the end of regulation.
However, the Tigers were unable to cash in from downtown in OT, when Nick Tate’s heave from behind the arc fell short as time expired and Northeast fell 87-85.
Sophomore guards Tyler Pritchard and Tate both scored in double figures with 23 and 14 respectively. Cody Garrett and Cedric Janes added 10 points a piece while Daniel Burton got his first collegiate double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Charles Easley also had a career night with seven points and 13 boards for the Tigers.
The Bobcats were led by Brandon Givens’ 31 points and eight boards followed by Kelvin Nixon’s 12 and Derrious Gilmore’s 11.
Head Coach David Robbins’ squad will be back on the hardwood on Thursday, November 18 at Wallace State Community College (Hanceville, Ala.) for the men’s only match-up.
Coach Ricky Ford’s Lady Tigers will start back up on November 29 when both the men and women travel to Meridian Community College on Monday, November 29.
