Itawamba Community College women and men’s soccer coach Mike Sullivan announced sophomore defenders Katelynn Davis (Cordova, TN) and Logan Ayers (Tupelo Christian) were selected as National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region 23 team.
“It was a surprise and an honor to be considered one of the top players in the Region,” said Davis. “We really improved as team throughout the season. We started out with small numbers and didn’t expect the success we had, but we really came together as a team to be able to have an outstanding season.
The Lady Indians advanced to the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Tournament after finishing second in the North division.
“I am really honored and was really surprised when Coach Sullivan told me about getting the award,” said Ayers. “I really enjoyed my time at ICC, it’s a really good atmosphere to be able to work hard and you can accomplish a lot when you enjoy working with the guys every single day. ICC has really helped me grow as a person and a player.”
Ayers finished tied with a team-high five goals and added one assist for a total of 11 points on the season. The Indians missed out on postseason play after finishing third in the division.
Players receiving All-State honors include: Paige Zahller (New Albany), Shelby Brown (New Albany), Kayla Parker (Pontotoc), Trace Nabors (Tupelo), Hunter Groenveld (Hernando), and Tyler Cunningham (Jacksonville, AL).
“We were well-represented by both squads,” said Sullivan. “All eight of the players that received postseason honors played their hearts out all season and earned the recognition.”
The women and men’s program both received the 2010 Tom Sheppard Sportsmanship Award.
