Come and celebrate the season, enjoy sweets, and support area artists and the Tallahatchie Arts Council by attending upcoming weekend events at the Magnolia Civic Center in downtown New Albany.    The Christmas season in New Albany and Union County began with the New Albany Christmas parade on Monday, December 1, 2008. The season’s festivities will continue into the weekend with the play and other events at the Magnolia Civic Center in downtown New Albany.

The Tallahatchie River Players is sponsoring the play, ‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’, which will be shown for one performance on Friday, December 5 at 7 p.m. and two performances will be shown on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 2 and 7 p.m. The tickets cost $8 for adults and $6 for children. Union County Development Association Tourism Director Bethany Dalton said, “Please come and shop and experience the holiday season while also enjoying the production.”

On Friday, December 5 from 6-9 p.m., the Tallahatchie Arts Council (TAC) will host the Holly Jolly Art-A-Fair, Sweets of the Season, and a silent auction. The event is scheduled to highlight local artists’ work, along with a sampling of desserts. New Albany blended coffee will begin being sold at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The silent auction will feature hand-crafted pieces and paintings and the proceeds of the auction will go to the newly reorganized TAC. The art walk and sale will be on Saturday, December 6 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and will feature artists’ work from the area in the Civic Center and at Bankhead Gallery.  Hand-painted ornaments will be on sale as well as TAC long-sleeve t-shirts. TAC supporter Betsey Hamilton, said, “ This is our first art show and sale and we hope that this will become an annual event so that our local artists will have a venue to display their art and the public has an opportunity to buy local art and support local artists.”

For more information, call 534-4354 or 538-0014. The cost for the silent auction, Art-A-Fair and Sweets of the Season is $5 if you do not have a ticket to the play.
