New Albany and East Union will both be at home this week, and for the Bulldogs, it is the start of division play.
Hosting Senatobia for homecoming, the Bulldogs hope to snap a three-game losing streak and open division play on a good note.
“When we look at them on film, they’re a lot like us. Their three losses have been to quality teams, and they’ve been very competitive in every game,” New Albany coach Ron Price said. “They do the same stuff we do on offense, and their quarterback is an athlete, who can run the ball at any time, so our focus is trying to contain their speed and not let them get outside.”
After another close loss last week, Price said his team is focused and ready for another battle this week.
“We expect nothing less than another four-quarter battle on Friday night,” he said. “Our kids are focused, and for our seniors, this will be their final homecoming game, and we want to celebrate a win for them. Hopefully we have all of our mistakes out of the way now, because if you make one at this point in division play, it really sets you back as a playoff team.”
Also on a three-game losing streak, the Urchins host Benton Count, and head coach Scott Duley hopes his team can eliminate turnovers and pick up its third win of the season.
“I think that they either get nervous or they don’t understand how different it is in practice compared to a game,’ Duley said. “Everything is faster, and when things go bad, it tends to snowball for us. We had the four turnovers against Ripley and then opened with four turnovers against Strayhorn.”
The Urchins’ next two games (Benton County and New Site) are against the two teams the Union County squad beat last year, and Duley is focusing on getting the morale up in the team’s final four games of the season.
“The two teams we play next are the two we beat last year, and hopefully our kids’ confidence will be up,” he said. “ If the confidence is up, we’ll play well.”
Friday’s games at Kitchens’ Field and BNA Bank Park are set for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
Homecoming festivities for New Albany will be held before the game.
