New Albany had its final preseason test on Friday night, hosting Kossuth in a jamboree game at Kitchens’ Field. Playing two quarters, the Bulldogs finished on top, 7-0, and know now what to work on in preparation for next week’s season opener against Ripley.
View Map“Effort was good, and the kids worked really hard tonight. We found out what we need to work on in the next week,” head coach Ron Price said. “I am disappointed in our pass protection. Our guys have to know who to pick up. Kossuth wasn’t blitzing any, we were just breaking down in our protection, so we have to work on that this week.”
The Bulldogs’ touchdown came late in the first quarter, as senior running back Boston Newsome broke free for the long score on the ground. Kossuth had an opportunity to tie the game in the second, making it inside the five-yard line, but an intentional grounding call on top of the Bulldogs’ defense left the Aggies empty handed, turning the ball over on downs.
“Defense was put in a couple of tough positions, but they stood tough like they always do” Price said. “That helps with confidence on defense when they make plays like that, keeping other teams out of the end zone.”
The regular season opens next Friday, as New Albany will host Ripley in the Maroon Madness game. The Bulldogs will take film from this jamboree and focus on what they need to work on before facing the Tigers.
“We got a lot of good things we can work on tonight, and the best thing is we had the opportunity to video, so we’ll look at that and know what to work on,” Price said. “In seven days it will be for real.”
